Steel is one of the most important materials in modern society. It is a ubiquitous material with a valuable combination of properties, such as strength, versatility and recyclability. Steel has been around for thousands of years, but we have yet to fully grasp its potential. Making its production more sustainable is a central challenge for the industry. This requires advances in both low-CO₂ production from iron ore and scrap-based steelmaking.

I am Ville-Valtteri Visuri, Associate Professor at the University of Oulu, where I lead the Primary Metallurgy Research Group within the Process Metallurgy Research Unit. My work focuses on advancing sustainable steelmaking through research in chemical kinetics, transport phenomena, and new processes such as hydrogen plasma smelting reduction.
